Coach vs Personal Trainer

Coach vs Personal Trainer – What’s the difference?

Coach: – Responsible for training athletes in a given sport – Helps to assist athletes reach their highest potential via appropriate programming, technical adjustments and addressing weaknesses – Often by the athletes side at competitive events to provide support and immediate feedback – More often than not, the coach is someone who takes part, or has previously taken part in the sport and is able to offer real world advice from experience, both positive and negative – The coach is able to communicate effectively with athletes, as well as use evaluation tests to monitor training progress. They can predict performance and decide best options which is crucial at competitive events
Personal Trainer:
– A qualified person who is able to help clients reach their health and fitness goals through appropriate cardiovascular, flexibility and resistance exercise
– A personal trainer is often hired to motivate others to improve their overall health and fitness
– The trainer should, at the very least, have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology, exercise prescription and programme design – Like the coach, a trainer should also be able to communicate effectively with their client and provide support when needed

When looking for a Coach or Personal Trainer at your gym you should ask yourself, is that person able to offer you what you need?
With plethora of training providers available offering someone the chance to become a personal trainer, do not assume that this person is now able to offer you the support and help you require. Bare in mind that some of these courses are even online courses giving the individual very little to no practical experience.
The title “Coach” or “Personal Trainer” often means little unless that person can deliver. Most trainers should be able to help you with your general run of the mill goals like weight loss, physique improvements and increased fitness but why not use a coach/trainer who can offer you this as well as all of the above?

Of course everyone needs to start somewhere within a chosen career path, but don’t expect Beluga Caviar if you buy chickpeas!
